  • In a wonderfully integrated and dynamic structure expressing the rhythm and harmony of life, Nataraja is shown with four hands representing cardinal directions. He is dancing, his left leg is raised elegantly and the right leg on a prostrate figure – ‘Apasmara Purusha’, a persona of confusion and ignorance over whom Shiva is winning. There is a flame in the upper left-hand, under the lower left-hand point towards the dwarf, which is shown holding the cobra.
  • The snake which stands for ego is seen boiling from its arms, legs and hair, which is braided and bejeweled. His matted locks are rotating as he dances within an arc of fire representing an endless cycle of birth and death. He has a skull on his head, which symbolizes his victory over death.
  • Goddess Ganga, the symbol of the holy river Ganga, also sits on her hairdo. His third eye is a symbol of his omnipresence, intuition, and wisdom. The entire statue rests on a lotus pedestal, which symbolizes the creative powers of the universe.
  • The Hindu view of matter in the light of modern physics “and later in the Tao of Physics beautifully relates Nataraja’s dance with modern physics.
  • He states that “every subatomic particle not only dances energy but also energy dances; a pulsing process of creation and breakdown … without end … For modern physicists, then Shiva’s dance of subatomic matter As in Hindu mythology, it is a continuous dance of creation and encompasses the entire universe; the basis of all existence and all natural phenomena.
